Homelab Heat Management

One of the largest problems you will have when running a home lab is heat management. After all, heat is is caused by resistance from electricity and servers are very good at that. There are many ways you can manage the heat and this guide will help you.

Reducing Heat

This may seem obvious, but the one way to reduce heat is to reduce heat. What do I mean by this? Upgrade your homelab! Rather than using older equipment which is not as efficient, upgrade to CPUs that are more efficient, power supplies that are more efficient, drives that are more efficient. When you improve efficiency, power consumption goes down. Reduced consumption translates into lower exhaust temperatures. Don't go buy the latest and greatest hardware, though. But if you're using some really old stuff, consider upgrading.

A cheaper solution is to use a portable AC unit. These units can help move heat outside as they have an exhaust hose that goes directly outside. Keep in mind though that these units can add extra noise as they don't necessarily stop the fan after shutting off the compressor. These units can break unexpectedly. I had one that ended up having a refridgerant leak. While this was unexpected, I noticed when it couldn't keep up with the heat that was coming out. Air was blowing warm, not cold. It was a bit of a hassle to get rid of as you can't just throw it out in the trash. And if you know anything about AC units, they're not easy to repair. So either I could pay as much as a new unit (if not more) to repair it, or just buy a new unit. This was also a fluke. I had used many of these portable AC units in offices with makeshift server rooms over the years and never had one fail or leak.
